Montevideo (VNA) – Uruguay and Vietnam still hold vast potential to deepen their cooperation across a variety of areas, affirmed Secretary General of the Communist Party of Uruguay Juan Castillo.

In a recent conversation with a Vietnam News Agency reporter in Montevideo, which coincided with Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay Ngo Minh Nguyet’s visit to the South American country from January 7-9, Castillo underlined the importance of the bilateral relationship. It represents a long-standing friendship and solidarity between their people over decades – a bond that has strengthened in recent years, especially in the fields of diplomacy and trade.

He noted that under the governments of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio - FA) coalition, diplomatic ties have flourished, considerably contributing to bilateral trade. The exchange of delegations have also been facilitated, with high-level delegations from the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Government, the National Assembly, and local administration visiting Uruguay, as well as those from Uruguay visiting Vietnam.

The host believed that Nguyet’s visit to Uruguay, which includes activities such as presenting her credentials and holding a working session with President of the Chamber of Representatives Ana Olivera, will bolster this collaboration even further.

With the FA coalition set to assume a new administration, Castillo saw a prime opportunity to consolidate and expand the multifaceted relationship between the two countries, suggesting a boost in trade exchanges within the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and a push in the negotiation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the bloc.

Authorities of Montevideo decided to designate a Vietnam Space on José Pedro Varela avenue in the capital last year. This is a deep gesture that symbolises the growing ties between the two governments and their people, he hoped that works under the project would be completed in time this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification (April 30) and the 135th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19)./.
