Buenos Aires (VNA) – General Secretary of the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) and Minister of Labour and Social Security Juan Castillo has praised Vietnam’s growing role in the international arena, calling it clear proof of the effectiveness and sustainability of the Southeast Asian country’s development model.

Talking to the Vietnam News Agency’s correspondents on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of National Day of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 – 2025), Castillo highlighted the historical significance of the event, saying that it is not only a historic milestone for Vietnam but also a powerful symbol for national liberation movements and social progress worldwide.

Castillo congratulated the Vietnamese Party, State, and people on the historic event, stressing that the country’s great achievements over the past eight decades are the result of its people’s resilient struggle, self-reliance, and aspiration to build a fair, democratic, and civilised society.

Uruguay has closely followed the revolutionary journey of Vietnam — a heroic nation that overcame countless difficulties and challenges to gain independence, restore sovereignty, and rebuild after war, he affirmed, noting that despite economic hardships, Vietnam has remained steadfast on its socialist path, steadily advancing its economy, ensuring social welfare, and improving people’s living standards.

He highly valued the growing cooperation between Vietnam and Uruguay, highlighting the close ties between the PCU and the Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, as an important bridge for people-to-people diplomacy and cultural exchange.

Vietnam is a shining example of sustainable development and renovation, the Uruguayan Party leader stressed, adding that his country regards Vietnam as a loyal and inspiring friend in the journey toward building a humane, just, and peaceful world.

Castillo announced a plan to build a statue of President Ho Chi Minh in Montevideo, symbolising the Uruguayan people’s admiration and gratitude for the great leader of Vietnam. He said that the monument is not only a tribute to the Vietnamese leader but also a message to future generations, affirming the thought, revolutionary spirit, and courage of President Ho Chi Minh, who devoted his entire life to national liberation and noble international ideals.

The monument will serve as a valuable foundation for further strengthening the friendship between the two countries, he said, affirming that the path paved by President Ho Chi Minh continues to be carried forward.

In Uruguay’s new political context, with many challenges and responsibilities, the country remains committed to the common goal of promoting peace, justice, and prosperity, with Vietnam serving as an important source of inspiration on that path, he said./.
