Hanoi (VNA) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s July 4 – 8 trip to Brazil for the expanded BRICS summit and bilateral activities presents an opportunity for Vietnam to showcase its determination and aspirations for development in a new era, according to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang.

Talking to the Vietnam News Agency ahead of the PM’s trip, Hang said the leader is also expected to reaffirm Vietnam's strong commitment to peace, stability, cooperation, and development on this occasion; as well as its desire to deepen ties with Brazil and diversify economic, trade, and investment partnerships with high-potential regions.

It will serve as an important diplomatic bridge to further strengthen the growing friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Brazil, while promoting Vietnam’s image and position in Central and South America, the official added.

Hang highlighted the importance of the trip, which will feature a broad of bilateral and multilateral engagements. She noted that it will contribute to the concrete implementation of the key objectives set out in the Politburo’s Resolution No. 59-NQ/TW on international integration in the current context, demonstrating Vietnam’s consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification of international relations, and being a friend, trustworthy partner, and responsible member of the international community.

This marks the first time Vietnam has participated as a partner country at the BRICS Summit - an increasingly influential multilateral cooperation mechanism of emerging economies in both economic and political spheres, she said.

According to the official, Vietnam’s engagement as a BRICS partner and its presence at the summit reflects the Southeast Asian nation’s responsible role and contributions to multilateral mechanisms, and its efforts and commitment to promoting the voice and role of developing countries, strengthening international solidarity and inclusive multilateralism based on respect for international law, while also deepening cooperation with BRICS member states.

The PM’s attendance at the summit gives a chance for Vietnam to actively engage in advancing inclusive and sustainable global governance, amplifying the voice of developing nations in addressing current challenges, and sharing experiences, perspectives, and development-related visions and practices. It is also hoped to foster cooperation in areas aligned with Vietnam’s priorities and interests, Hang said.

Vietnam can also seize this opportunity to mobilise international resources in support of its national development goals during this pivotal era of development, Hang noted.

According to the official, BRICS member states and invited countries at the summit are comprehensive strategic partners, key partners, and traditional friends of Vietnam. Brazil is a strategic partner of Vietnam, possessing strengths that complement Vietnam’s development demand and align with its sustainable development orientations.

Regarding the Vietnam – Brazil strategic partnership, Hang stressed the bilateral ties have been continuously strengthened and are thriving, noting that the South American nation is Vietnam's crucial strategic partner and largest trading partner in the region, with two-way trade hitting nearly 8 billion USD in 2024.

Building on the success of PM Chinh’s working trip to Brazil to attend the G20 Summit in November 2024, and Brazilian President Lula da Silva’s state visit to Vietnam in March 2025, the two sides have continued to maintain and strengthen many bilateral dialogue mechanism, and exchanges of all-level delegations, she said.

Key areas of cooperation, such as agriculture, energy, science - technology, environmental protection, and climate change response, are of particular interest to both countries’ leaders, she said, noting that these are regarded as important pillars of the action plan for implementing the Vietnam–Brazil strategic partnership in the next five years.

Importantly, the visit provides an opportunity for Vietnamese and Brazilian leaders to discuss major orientations to foster cooperation in trade, investment, and agriculture, and to effectively advance the shared goal of diversifying markets, products, and supply chains amid the current complexities of global trade, Hang stated.

She expressed her belief that the PM’s visit will be successful on all fronts, highlighting Vietnam’s growing role and international position, and responsible engagement, thereby contributing actively to promoting peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world. /.
