Viettel exceeds target of 20,000 new 5G stations by more than three weeks

Viettel plans to continue scaling up its network from now until the end of 2025, with an additional 23,500 stations scheduled for installation, nearly quadruple the number rolled out in 2024. Once completed, Viettel will operate Vietnam’s largest 5G network, with 30,000 stations covering 90% of outdoor areas and 70% of indoor spaces nationwide, from major cities to rural regions.

Hanoi (VNA) – Military-run telecom group Viettel has surpassed its 2025 rollout schedule, completing the installation of 20,000 new 5G base stations more than three weeks ahead of the timeline pledged to the Government.

The group expects its total number of 5G stations to reach 30,000 by December 31, providing coverage across 90% of outdoor areas nationwide.

Earlier this year, the National Assembly approved Resolution No. 193/2025/QH15, introducing special mechanisms and policies designed to drive breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation. Under the Government’s Decree No. 88/2025/ND-CP, enterprises will qualify for State support in expanding nationwide 5G infrastructure if they have at least 20,000 5G stations accepted and put into operation between February 19 and December 31, 2025.

These incentives form part of wider efforts to accelerate digital transformation and advance the targets set out in the Politburo’s Resolution No. 57, which calls for comprehensive 5G coverage and modern digital infrastructure across Vietnam by 2030.

The operator is also strengthening its technological edge. Viettel remains the only carrier in Vietnam to deploy a Standalone (SA) 5G network, a complete 5G architecture using 5G technology across both core and radio components, capable of delivering peak speeds of up to 10 Gbps. In practical use, 5G connections are 15-20 times faster than 4G.

The SA network enables a range of advanced applications, including network slicing for tailored connectivity; ultra-low-latency services for mission-critical use; secure private networks for defence and security; remote medical services leveraging sub-millisecond latency and ultra-high reliability; and smart urban and industrial systems capable of supporting millions of IoT devices per square kilometre for real-time monitoring and automation.

Viettel has integrated its domestically developed 5G technologies into its nationwide infrastructure on a large scale, helping the group exceed deployment commitments while underscoring the high-tech capabilities it has cultivated through years of research and investment./.
