Hanoi (VNA) - Party General Secretary To Lam has highlighted the power of great national unity in an article written on the occasion of the 95th traditional day of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

The Vietnam News Agency respectfully introduces a translation of the article.

PROMOTING THE STRENGTH OF GREAT NATIONAL UNITY TO DEVELOP THE COUNTRY

To Lam
General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam

Ninety-five years ago, under the leadership of the Party, the Anti-Imperialist Alliance was founded on November 18, 1930, becoming the first organisation of Vietnam’s National United Front. Throughout the struggle for national liberation and the process of national construction, under different names and in various forms, the National United Front has always fulfilled its mission of gathering and uniting all strata of the Vietnamese people. At every stage of history, its core principle has remained unchanged — uniting the entire nation for the common goals of national independence and the people’s prosperity and happiness.

President Ho Chi Minh, inheriting the nation’s and humanity’s finest traditions of great unity, initiated and nurtured the bloc of great national unity when we established the people’s administration. His ideology has been inherited and carried forward by our Party in every historical period. The Party has consistently regarded great national unity as a strategic policy, a precious tradition, a source of the nation’s and revolution’s strength, and a decisive factor in every victory of national construction, defence, and development. “Unity, unity, great unity – Success, success, great success” — has become a truth and a way of life for us all.

Throughout the prolonged and arduous wars of resistance, it was the strength of national unity that forged the path to great victories. From the 1945 August Revolution to the 1954 Dien Bien Phu Victory, from the Great Spring Victory in 1975 to the national “Doi Moi” (Renewal) process, every historic turning point has borne the imprint of the people’s unanimity and concerted efforts under the Party’s leadership. By promoting the spirit of “great national unity,” millions of Vietnamese from all social strata, religions, and ethnic groups rallied under the Party’s flag, fighting and sacrificing for the nation’s independence, freedom, and reunification.

Today, the great lesson of national unity remains as relevant as ever. Observing the world, we can better appreciate the value of a united nation — one that “stands as one from top to grassroots”, where “generals and soldiers are as father and son, sharing sweet wine as they share river water,” and where “the gourd love the pumpkin, as though different, they share the same trellis” - living in harmony and peace in the Land of the Dragon and the Fairy while many countries are struggling with social divisions, ethnic and religious conflicts, and prolonged political instability. In many places in the world, wars, violence, and factional strife have plunged people into displacement and abject poverty. The global geopolitical landscape is expected to remain volatile and unpredictable. Against that backdrop, Vietnam has emerged as a bright spot with a stable socio-political environment, where the people stand united and in consensus, striving towards the shared goal of national construction and development.

A recent and vivid example of this spirit of unity and democracy in our society is the political activity of contributing feedback to the draft documents for the 14th National Party Congress. For the first time, public consultation on Party Congress documents has been carried out extensively, applying digital technology to enable all Vietnamese citizens at home and abroad to participate with ease. Through the VNeID application on smartphones and online portals, millions of citizens have sent their thoughtful feedback to the Party. So far, nearly three million submissions have been received through various channels, including more than two million via the VNeID platform.

This represents the largest number of public inputs ever collected for a Party Congress, vividly demonstrating the spirit of democracy, consensus, and the sense of political responsibility of the people towards the nation’s major decisions. The people’s voices — arising from the realities of life — will be invaluable contributions helping the Party refine its policies, reflecting their will and aspirations in the documents of the upcoming 14th National Party Congress.

Another notable example is the wave of natural disasters that has struck many provinces and cities across the country since early 2025, especially in the northern, central, and Central Highlands regions, where successive storms and floods have caused severe human and property losses. In response, under the close direction of the Party and the State, forces like the army, police, healthcare workers, and militia quickly mobilised to rescue and evacuate affected residents and support post-flood recovery efforts. At the same time, people nationwide joined hands in solidarity, upholding the traditions of “mutual assistance and compassion,” “the good leaves protect the torn ones,” and “loving others as oneself”. From agencies, organisations, and businesses to spontaneous charitable groups and youth volunteer teams, resources were mobilised and donations collected to support flood-affected compatriots in overcoming hardship.

Not only united within the country, Vietnamese people at home and abroad are also increasingly closely connected. Our overseas Vietnamese in many countries always look toward to the Fatherland, contributing both intellectual and financial resources to the homeland in various ways. "For Vietnam's seas and islands" donation campaigns, programmes connecting overseas Vietnamese businessmen to invest in the country, or free Vietnamese language classes organised by the Vietnamese community abroad - all stem from the heart always turning to their roots, from the spirit of great unity of the descendants of Lac Hong no matter where they are. It can be affirmed that never before has our great national unity bloc, encompassing compatriots at home and more than 5 million Vietnamese abroad, been as firmly consolidated as it is today. This is a great source of internal strength, a fulcrum for the country to overcome all challenges, moving forward on the path of innovation and integration.

In the coming time, to continue consolidating the great national unity, first of all, we must strengthen solidarity in the Party and the great national unity under the leadership of the Party. More than ever, we need to give top priority to consolidating and promoting the strength of great unity, considering it a key factor in bringing the country into a new era of development. This requires each cadre and Party member to set an example, "match words with actions", put the interests of the nation and people above all else; resolutely fight and defeat all plots, methods and tricks of hostile forces that aim to divide our unity bloc.

At the same time, we must constantly improve the material and spiritual life and protect the legitimate rights of the people. This is both the goal and the driving force to consolidate the great national unity bloc. The Party identifies the people as the centre; the happiness and prosperity of the people as the goal to strive for. Special care must be taken of vulnerable people and those living in disadvantaged areas such as ethnic minorities, people in remote areas, border areas, islands, former revolutionary bases, areas frequently affected by natural disasters, among others. It is also necessary to continue to effectively implement sustainable poverty reduction programmes and social security policies to ensure that no one is left behind. When the people are prosperous, the country is strong, democratic, fair, civilised, and when everyone enjoys the fruits of equitable development, the great solidarity bloc will be stronger, and no force can incite division.

In addition, it is necessary to strongly innovate the content and methods of operation of the Fatherland Front and organisations, focusing on the grassroots and taking the people as the centre of service. The Front needs to better perform its core role in gathering and uniting social classes, outstanding individuals, aiming to the common goal of a strong and prosperous Vietnam. The Front must become a broad forum for all classes of people, compatriots of all ethnicities, religions, and overseas Vietnamese to meet, exchange, and express their opinions and aspirations in a democratic and open manner. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on promoting the role of intellectuals, experts, prestigious people in society and the Vietnamese community abroad in giving advice on building the country.

On the other hand, great unity should not be limited within the country but needs to be expanded internationally. Through this, Vietnam can gain the support of international friends, creating a favourable environment for the cause of building and sageguarding the Fatherland; while strengthening solidarity between Vietnamese people and people of other countries, especially with peace-loving and progressive forces in the world. A stable, harmonious, and benevolent Vietnam will certainly make important contributions to peace, cooperation and common development of mankind.

The 95-year history of building and promoting the strength of great national unity is a glorious journey, leaving behind many profound lessons. Thanks to unity, our people have accomplished what once seemed impossible, from winning great wars of national liberation and firmly safeguarding independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, to rising above poverty and backwardness. Today, faced with intertwined opportunities and challenges, we must strengthen the great national unity bloc as we would the apple of our eye. Every Vietnamese, regardless of region, ethnicity, religion or profession, shares the same determination: to unite for the prosperous future of the country. That is the source of will, belief and strength to realise the goal of building a strong, prosperous Vietnam with happy people. Our Vietnam — a heroic nation with united, industrious, and creative people — will surely create new development miracles and take its rightful place, standing shoulder to shoulder with friends across the five continents./.
